Un Chien Andalou has no Andalusian Dog!?

Since this is surrealism, anything goes, but it's a strange title considering that there is no dog in the film

Oh true

Like you said, in surrealism anything goes. So the title is not as strange as anything else in the film.

"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".

I think the word "dog" might just be used as a swear word. Also, I think Dalí came from Andalusia?

In the ending scene at the beach, I think I remember seeing a very small rock at the far side of the screen that looked a *bit* dog-like, and the beach looked *kinda* Andalusian... so that's definitely where the Andalusian Dog is! Yes, I've finally cracked the meaning of this film!

"Civilization is like a thin layer of ice upon a deep ocean of chaos and darkness."

reply

No, they are both Spaniards, but Dalí is from Catalonia and Buñuel is from Aragon, only García Lorca is from Andalusia. They met each other at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid, the most important cultural center of Spain before the Spanish Civil War.

Maybe the man is An Andalusian Dog. Could certainly be perceived as An Andalusian Horn Dog.

Lots of film titles referencing dogs. Stray Dog, Straw Dogs, Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai.

There weren't dogs in Reservoir Dogs either. What a crock! (kidding)

oh man I laughed loudly. God bless you.

Bunuel received a telegram from his mother in Paris the morning of the first day of shooting that his childhood dog had passed away. He had never particularly liked the dog, but his mother adored him and she had financed the film for him and Dali. He felt he had to make a loving gesture to his "producer." Thus the name of the film.
