Pixies

The entire "Debaser" from the "Doolittle" album is about Frank Black seeing this movie

reply

Well that certainly explains why he yells "I am un chien andalusia".
And of course all that about "slicing up eyeballs".

reply

Well done. You deserve a trophy. Thank you for sharing your wonderful analytical skills.

Although I already knew that (Im from Mass), I appreciate your 2 cents. People can sometimes take the movie snob thing to a rediculous level where they act like complete danks to others. So, here's to restoring your message board self esteem! cheers!

Yeah, Pixies rock. Too bad they were hung up on a "movie" like this.

reply

They were "hung up" on a film like this because they went to UMass and there is a class based soley on Un Chien Andalou. They still have it there... wild. But why would one even eff with someone elses' interest? Get over it.

reply

haha you're like a 90s progressive teenager tool.

reply

No d i c k-bag, Im probably older than you anyway; BUT Im from the great state of Mass and it's just a known fact.

Again, well done.

reply

frank black corrupted the title into un chien ana-lucia to make it sound more spanish and less french

reply

What does the word "debaser" means anyway? In this context, i mean.

reply

From what i remember, the word means to remove something from a pedestal, to de-throne or bring it down perhaps. Hard to explain. I think thats the type of debase 'Black' was going for, as the other meaning is lowering the values of coins i believe.

As for the explanation of the use of this word for the song, i have no obvious ideas, but perphaps (just like the film) its to bring down the viewer to his/her basic urges and needs in a sub-conconcious state.

Therefore the film itself is the 'Debaser'

Who knows...

reply

Yeah, makes sense. Or maybe "debaser", in this context, means smtng that breaks barriers (the barrier of common sense, in this case). That's why Black says that he wants to be a "debaser" when he grows up (i.e. a person that stands out of the herd and intends to change the whole world as we know it, even if he has to shock in order to succeed in his intentions).

Suddenly, the lyric makes complete sense. Thank you for your explanation, it was very enlightening.

reply

I like your take on the song as well. I think 'Black' was pretty different with the writing songs about aliens, incest, singing in spanish and actually making original hard to swallow music. So his individuality and shocking nature could well be his 'debasing'.

I want to grow up to be, to be a debaser "person that stands out of the herd"

Makes perfect sense to me.

He definitely did achieve it.

reply

The title "Debaser" comes from Un chien andalou debasing morality and standards of art, according to Black Francis.

reply

maybe the lyrics got frank through the class?

reply

That's a pretty well known fact. I don't want to offend anybody, but did the Pixies popularity get really out of hand after all the poseurs heard "Where is My Mind" on "Fight Club". They've always been universally respected as the great band in the shadow of a bunch of Nirvana hype. Their obscurity was what was a lot of their appeal.

reply

in america maybe, but in the UK and Ireland they've always been really popular, Fight Club may have given them a new lease of life though.

"...scum like you never become pharmacists!"

reply

[deleted]

I tend to agree with bane... I don't think Black thought much of the movie.

reply

I bet that he loved Fight Club and I think that the Pixies want fans even if they are new fans (what you may call poseurs). I grew up on the Pixies and they were pretty big here in Canada in the nineties and always packed the house. It is ridiculous to think that a band wouldn't want exposure or to have a cool movie like Fight Club use one of their songs. I have never heard the Pixies say that they didn't want to be a mainstream act or some sort of underground band that only a select group of "cool" people were allowed to listen to.

If faced with certain death, die laughing.

reply

Well, that's all well and good (though I don't necessarily agree with you) BUT what is a "Debaser"? To debase something is to bring it down to its "base" level. That can mean to make it common or, even worse, sleazy. I think that someone like Frank Black would have LOVED this film which brings emotions and fantasies down to their commonly shared "base" (although we may not like to admit as much) level. That's what I think was BEHIND the song however the interpretation is up to the the listener: as it should be with all forms of art. Nothing should be TOO well defined otherwise it loses any meaning it might have held. The idea is to throw it out there and have you make up your mind for yourself. Why do peope need everything explained? You may as well be in a nursing home being spoon-fed mushy bananas. Use your brain and THINK about it what it means to YOU - that's all that matters.

reply

"Their obscurity was what was a lot of their appeal."

Wow, that's not pretentious at all. Nice to see you judge things based on their artistic merit.

reply

I liked them cause they done write the songs all good.
