SPOILERS FOR THE NOVEL!
I have not read the novel in quite some time, but I believe Dea dies, and Gwynplaine then commits suicide by jumping off the ship they are on and drowning.

Oh, I wish they had did the ending like the book... for some strange reason in me... I don't know I really LOVE tragic romance movies/stories!
Though I really did love the ending for this movie. I was really happy to see Gwynplaine truly happy finally. Maybe they could have filmed an alternate ending that followed the book and featured it on the DVD. Oh, well. It's still a VERY WONDERFUL movie! I love it so much and Conrad was just too adorable for words! Mary Philbin was soooo pretty! The prettiest I have ever seen her!
"He who gazes upon the sun, need not debate it's brilliance! ... Uh, Ling Po." -Harold Lloyd
i generally prefer the tragic ending in films but i must say i love the happier ending moreso because you feel so much for Gwynplaine that you want him to be happy, seeing that he's been a tortured soul who only wants to be loved, unconditionally. i have always felt that her dying would be too abrupt, within the film at least, and would change the whole film if you went back and changed it to make continuity.
shareIn a way, the ending of the novel (which I *did* read) appeared to me strange, in a reather bad way. It is like Hugo realizing that he was in real danger of having the story end happily with them being reunited, therefore he quickly made Dea die of a broken heart and Gwynplaine kill himself. It didn't really come natural.
shareI found the book very difficult to get through. The language was much different and as I recall there is quite a bit of time spent on Gwynplain's childhood. He doesn't turn adult until half way through the book.
