What if Paul Leni had lived?

After watching Waxworks, The Cat and the Canary, and The Man Who Laughs, I've wondered what would've happened had Leni lived longer. Would Dracula become Leni's? What would it have been like.

I think Leni would have done a very interesting Dracula, maybe with Carl Freund at the camera... One of those interesting 'what ifs'. Also, Conrad Veidt was one of the actors considered for the role of Dracula after Lon Chaney died. But Veidt declined for fear of typecasting. He was right too - he also had a very thick german accent at that time. But Veidt would have been SO INTERESTING as the vampire.

This cracks me up.

"Lovers of the game 'What if...?' have spent untold hours imagining the scope and impact that Universal's Dracula would have had upon the film world had the picture starred Conrad Veidt and been designed and directed by Paul Leni."
-exerpt from John Soister's essay in the KINO DVD

In the beginning, it is always dark...

He would have become Hitler's head of UFA, inasmuch as Leni was an ardent Nazi, a horror story unto himself.

Paul Leni a Nazi? In case you didn't know, Paul Leni was Jewish.

Excellent comment. BTQ - Love your ID - DwightFry. Clever. Love anything Conrad Veidt was in. Great actor & very easy on the eyes.
