This movie must be seen to be believed.

Superb, well-crafted, a forerunner of modern films.

Plus, I was surprised at how hot Joan Crawford looked back in 1927!!!

I agree. It's fascinating to watch.

I never took much care when people would rave about Lon Chaney. But "The Unknown" has changed my mind.

I totally agree. He was just amazing in it. The dexterity he had in using his feet to take the place of his hands for his charcter of Alonzo was like he used them in everyday life for real.

There were actually expressions he made with his toes for anger, and heartache and all sorts of feelings he made with them. It really blew my mind just how much talent this man actually had.

I know he was the villian in this film but he just wanted Nanon's love. I felt so bad for him at the end.

Like it said. For Alonzo there was an end to Hate called Death...
and for Nannon, and end to Hate....called Love.

So sad I had tears in my eyes. Dam it!

They called him "The Man of a Thousand Faces" but he was so much more than that!!!!

He died way too young. Only 47 years old.

His Mom and Dad were deaf, so he grew up doing and learning about facial expressions. If you're familiar with people who are deaf and use ASL (American Sign Language) you will see they are very expressive, not only with their hands but with their faces too (and bodies to a lesser extent). No wonder he was called the man with a thousand faces. Great, great movie. It's only my third silent move and I was enchanted . . . and scared!

Joan Crawford was very attractive in the early years of her career. If you haven't yet seen "Grand Hotel" you should watch Crawford in it. She gave a great performance and looked really good.
