Wasn't the bet won, once faust shook mephisto's hand & became young again?
And near the end, faust threatened to break the pact if mephisto didn't take him to save gretchen. So faust was free to break the pact whenever he wanted?
The chance for redemption through love wasn't part of the pact that God and Devil made, was it? I have always been wondering about that: did God change the rules of their game by his own decision? If somebody told me in a poker game, "wow I technically lost but luckily love has redeemed my hand so in the end I won", I'd be pretty pissed off...
But then again, why should God give a rat's ass about wether the devil is pissed off or not. Teaches the darned creature to make bets with an allmighty being, eh? ;)
Jumping into the conversation super late, but I thought the pact should've been considered broken once Mephisto decided to sabotage Faust's efforts to woo Gretchen.
