Question

I have a question regarding the novel: I've looked through it several times and I cannot find out what happens to Clopin. Does he die? How does he die?

The reason I ask this is because in 2007 I'm going to be making a short film that is adapted from the novel faithfully.

In the book, the soldiers kill Clopin and many other Truants when they try to break into the Church and get Esmeralda out. That's because King Louis thought that they were the people who wanted to hang Esmeralda as a sorceress and that they were violating the Church by forcing their way in and getting her out, so he sent his army to stop them. And once the soldiers had wiped out pretty much every single one of them, King Louis's orders were to get Esmeralda out and hang her anyway. Apparently he respects the Church a lot more, or not ? Go figure.
