The trivia notes on this film on IMDb say 10-15 mninutes of the film has been lost, but the running time is well over 2 hours. The 'Silver Screen Classics' showing in Canada ran a 1'35 edition, which would indicate that close to, if not more than a half hour is gone: does anyone know if the 2'00+ time is accurate for the original? Is the 1'35 the best we'll ever have?
The film was cut down from 12 reels to 10 reels after the roadshow. Since silent movie speeds were variable, it's impossible to tell the actual running time of the film in terms of minutes and seconds.
About 2000' (20 minutes or so) were cut out when the film went into general release after the roadshow. The 16mm show-at-home prints are the general release version and are for the most part complete.
Here are some facts about "The Hunchback of Notre Dame": Released September 6, 1923; cost: $1,250,000; 12,000 ft. on 12 reels. Now as to running time: it depends on projection speed. If it's projected at 24-frames a second (fps) which is the sound speed, it would run 133 minutes. At the silent speed of 20 fps, it would run 159 minutes. What we do not know is whether all of the original 12,000 feet still exists.
Image Entertainment, on October 6, will release "The Ultimate Edition" of this film, with a running time of 118 minutes. Who knows yet if this is projected at 20 or 24 fps, or if it a cut version of the film. Anyway, I have already ordered mine.
I have a version made by Front Row Entertainment in 2003 that runs 133 minutes. But I've never watched it (It's on my list of things to watch list because I have never seen the movie)!
I wish I could help you but I got it at Half Price Books for $6.98. If you give me your email address I could send you a picture of the cover tomorrow!
I jus watched it and I was disappointed to see that the DVD timer listed it was only 100 minutes! But, the back of the cover says it is 133 minutes. So, I don't have to send you a scan. Sorry about the false alarm.
I just got home and double-checked my DVD editions: One of the ones I own is that same Front Row edition, which does indeed list 133 min. I was quite disappointed recently to find out the same thing you discovered! I made sure to take a Sharpie pen to the cover's running-time so I don't get confused again.
That's one of the problems with silent films - there are often multiple versions of some movies. There's a new 3-Disc Lon Chaney collection, but there's almost no information, except that it has "THoND", "Phantom of the Opera", and "Oliver Twist". It's by St. Clair Entertainment. It supposedly has a few bonus features and 11 movies on the 3-Discs. No mention of the other 8 movies. It's probably a pretty bare-bones package since it's selling for less than $8 on several sites.
heres a list of british releses timed to the second by the british board of film censors notice there is no run time on its original relese the yes just means it was cut by the censors.the version i got is 1h 36m but i downloaded it from a torrent site by mistake in a universal monsters pakage it is remasterd and the speed looks normal when played on vlc media player theres no titals at the end just the end. the longest seems to be in the 90s at 137 mins but video runs difrent speed to dvd and pal runs difrent to ntsc i dont know if you can work out the difrence my math is like my spelling lol. update>>> http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews33/hunchback_of_notre_dame.htm

The just released Blu-ray from Flicker Alley/Blackhawk lists as 110 minutes. Actual time code on Disk is 1:49:09 (109 minutes). No idea if they timed at 20 frames or 24 frames per second.
