Choices to play Hutter

It is noted on this site that Gustav von Wangenheim was the third choice to play Hutter. Does anyone know who the other two choices were and why they did not accept the role?

Gustav reminds me of Harpo Marx. I'd like to know the other choices as well. I doubt they were big name actors, however.
