Which DVD version has the original music ?

I'm looking for a DVD version of the film with the original music composed by Osmán Pérez Freire and Gottfried Huppertz. Is there such a DVD ?

Argaman Bergman is the expert on Huppertz here on IMDb. Go to his Huppertz site at http://www.geocities.com/argaman_bergman/huppertz/index.html, and you can probably contact him directly. He's also posted a good deal of info on Huppertz on the Metropolis board.

There is no evidence that Huppertz wrote any music to Dr. Mabuse. He only acted in the first part of the film, that's it. Actually, no one knows who wrote the music that was played with the film in the 20's.

I've read that writing a separate score for a silent movie was rather uncommon. It was done for Die Nibelungen and Metropolis, but those were high prestige movies, and no expense was spared. 'Dr. Mabuse' was also a big film, so maybe there was a special score composed, but I wonder if they didn't just go the usual route of using stock music cues.

Usually for some movies where stock music was used there are records of which pieces were played in which scenes, but as far as I know for Dr. Mabuse even that is lost.

For Huppertz, he also wrote some pieces to be used as stock music for films. I know of at least one film in 1929 which used his music along with other pieces. Huppertz wrot such pieces (of which I do know) in 1925 as well as in 1928/9.

I don't have an answer, but I always loved the music to Mabuse, the theme. Is it some kind of German folk tune or anthem? It also appears in the Michael Caine picture Funeral in Berlin. That has a fantastic score which features the same tune in all kinds of arrangements and orchestrations, even used in the scene where the lady's fur coat drops and reveals a strapless dress.
