'A musketeer of the streets'?

I understand that this character was a crime boss, but I don't get the connection between that and the term "musketeer". Can someone explain how that is a slang term for what he was? Thanks.

I was surprised by that as well. However, I guess some definitions include terms like pal, buddy, friend, compadre, amigo, etc. Like the Three Musketeers (did they ever have muskets?) were all bffs - All for one and one for all!. So this character was like a "friend" (loose term) of the tenements. To me the guy was like the Fannuchi character of the Godfather II movie that ruled NYC's Little Italy. Some pal!
