I think this is one of the reasons they picked her as Rey. A masculine character. A girl who looks like a man.

She is ugly: have no breasts, no ass. Her forehead is as large as a starkiller. Teeth are another story. Noone perceives her as a woman. That was intended to make her look like a strong character.

I think that they didn't get a strong character. But they just got an ugly lead.

Being unfeminine doesn't make a woman look strong. Remember Jennifer Lawrance. She was strong as hell in Winter's Bone (2010). The most important point is that she was a strong "woman" in that movie. Not a faux-man.
