Gaslighting FRAUD, So Glad His Movie is Bombing; Should be Erased from the History Books
What a brilliant way to gatekeep moviemaking, by participating in a campaign where you subtly imply to the new generation of kids that they don't have to aim higher than an iPhone to make "cinema" and Oscar-winning movies! Very clever trolling, kind of like if a singer had shot an ad aimed towards kids and teens telling them that they can also cut Grammy-winning music recording their karaoke singing on an iPhone. No need to get an actual music producer, live band or professional music studio. Just karaoke and an iPhone will do!
What legitimate creative--who has a love of the craft--would EVER pull something like this? Legitimate musicians, artists, writers, painters...all they want to do is share their craft and be mentors to a new generation. I have never, in my entire life, ever come across this mentality in actual creatives along the likes of, "Hmmm, I'm really great at piano; I don't want anyone to know about how to play one, so I'll cut an ad implying that you can make great music on a Fisher Price piano."
This mentality outs Damien Chazelle as a FRAUD. I don't believe that this guy is an actual director in the truest sense of the term of someone with an actual vision who loves filmmaking. I just think that technology has advanced to such an extent that any monkey can crank out a movie that looks and feels cinematic, without having a creative bone in their bodies. For example, there are YouTubers who are putting out poorly researched, inaccurate "historical" videos that nevertheless have the slickness of a high quality TV production from the History Channel, PBS or some other network, because the technology just makes it easy. There is no reason to suppose that Chazelle isn't a beneficiary of this type of phenomenon.
