looks like another grand slam win

wimbledon on sunday

If he didn't play during the same era as Federer, Djokovic probably would have won half a dozen more grand slams and would be considered one of the all-time greats. Unfortunately for him, he usually had to get past the GOAT to win a title.

I have been watching Professional Tennis for a long time and there always are a hell of a lot of really superior and fascinating stars to watch -- Borg, McEnroe, Connors, Agassi, Sampras, Fed and Nadal, now the Joker. And I'm leaving out Arthur Ashe, Stefan Edburg, Michael Chang, and that Eastern Euro guy I can't remember his name but He Dominated for a couple years. Ivan something, I think, but not Russian because I didn't find him that way. Lenovic? I'm getting closer ....
That guy was really good even when no one liked him. And Vitas Geruliatis, he was another good one who had his Day in the Sun.

this might be Djokovic's year. Now that Federer is too old to challenge, Novak has won the Australian Open, the French (surprisingly), and will probably win Wimbledon again on Sunday. I am a Federer fan, but I kinda hope Djokovic pulls off the sweep.

reply

Ivan Lendl, that's who I was thinking of. Man, he was almost the Djokovic of his time.

reply

Djokovic is the GOAT right now. He is tied with Fed and Rafa in slams but has better h2h than both and rules just about every other statistic. I think if he wins USO, it will remove any doubt he is the best ever.

reply

No, it will just mean he has the most GS singles titles. Not the GOAT. I have him in my top ten but I judge a player by more than just GS singles titles. There are a lot of factors that go into picking a GOAT. He is your favorite, that is clear, and I respect what he has done but I admit I rarely enjoy watching his tennis.

reply

He is not my favourite at all. Nadal is my fave and always has been but I am willing to put my personal biases aside and acknowledge that Novak is statistically the best. Who you favour watching has really nothing to do with how great a tennis player is.

reply

It has a lot to do with it. Fans of tennis should want to watch a player, if he/she is the GOAT. For tennis, I can sometimes put stats aside, I can put GS titles aside, and go by what I see. Numbers can be misleading. I wouldn't consider Nadal or Djokovic for GOAT. Both top 10? Sure, though I am not a fan of either. I don't go out of my way to watch them play, I've seen more than enough of them throughout their careers. There are a lot of tennis players to be considered for GOAT going back a long ways. Seems like you are overlooking them. Don't feel too bad. Everyone does that in every single sport. The current 'best' becomes the all time GOAT.

reply

I don't ,"feel bad" at all but I don't agree that the "eye test" should be the sole criterion for who you determine the GOAT to be. I agree with recency bias in most sports but in the case of Men's tennis it is an outlier, where you have the three statistically best tennis players ever currently still playing.

I agree. He could easy play another 3 years at the top and pick up at min 5 slams. Rafa looks like he is close to retirement with all his injuries. Federer said he might not even play Wimbledon again so I think its fair to say Fed is done.
