‘The Crown’ Star Says Pay Discrepancies No Longer Secret Following Her Battle

Clare Foy is satisfied that her battle over pay for The Crown has paid off for other female actors.

The British star of the first two series of the Netflix big-budget drama was famously enraged on the discovery that, despite holding the crown of the title in her lead role of a young Elizabeth II, she was being paid less than her co-star Matt Smith, who played a young Prince Philip.

When this discrepancy came to light, the show’s producers Left Bank Pictures explained it down to Smith’s higher profile coming into the show. However, as Foy emerged the breakout star of the drama – securing a Golden Globe and two Emmy awards for her work – they pledged this would not happen again on the production.

This weekend, Foy told The Times newspaper she realised she had made a difference within the industry. “The difference is, as the female actor, you will get told you get parity.

“I’ve had people come up to me and say that they’ve been paid equal because of it. The industry will always try to keep as much at the top as humanly possible but the capacity to keep it all under lock and key is gone.”

I mean I like her and she seems harmless. But Matt Smith really WAS and IS bigger name in their pair. And when show started he was bigger profile and draw. He was after Doctor Who. She was nobody. And in 2 seasons her arc ended.

It's been 5 years since her arc ended on show and she has done nothing out of it. She does some small projects no one watches. She tried to go against type and did that The Girl in the Spider's Web action movie. But it was bad and flopped with 15 millions on a 43 millions budget. She is just one role actress, I'm afraid.

While Matt Smith keeps doing movies and big tv projects and got House of Dragons after Crown. So of course they viewed Matt Smith as bigger draw. They could have pay her move for second season, when show became popular after first one.

But I would like to see press asking how much Jennifer Lawrence was payed for No Hard Feelings and how much her costar Andrew Barth Feldman. Because something tells me she was payed millions. While he was probably payed something like 200k. Since he is nobody, despite being co-lead. And no one cares.
