Why is the character Karen Page so...

I quite enjoy Daredevil, I used to read the comics 50+ years ago, but what I can't understand is ...

Why the character Karen Page, who in the comics is a beautiful well turned out lovely girl, now portrayed by an actress who looks like she hasn't washed her hair in months, is continually wiping her nose with the back of her hand and sniffing, and basically looks like a down on her luck street hooker.
I found the third series extremely difficult to get through, wanting to fast forward when she was on screen, but knowing that I would lose the thread of the story if I did so. At times the third series looks like it should be renamed Karen Page as I am sure she was on screen more than anyone else, or maybe it just felt like it.
Her acting is pretty poor, but the moles/spots, whatever, the greasy hair and skin, the eyes that look like she has been injesting some toxic fumes, and then I read she was a model, what for, drug clinics?
