She also really wasn't given a lot of time to develop her character. That's important to keep in mind. I kind of got the impression she was going for the withdrawn, stoic Jane Eyre type. Dark Shadows's creator was inspired by Jane Eyre for Victoria Winters's character, so I think it's an appropriate choice to act the part from that angle. But with her limited screen time, it is admittedly easy to see her performance as stiff.

But I still kind of like her performance in a way. I hear there are a lot of deleted scenes, so maybe when the DVD comes out with those included we'll get a better feel for what kind of actress she is.

I didn't get that impression, but rather that her character was uneasy since she was lying to everyone about who she really was. There was paranoia in her, fear of getting caught, and pretending to be the "proper young lady" and not quite knowing how, having spent half her life in an asylum.

I thought she was quite good and played the character how she was supposed to be played.

As written and portrayed, there was nothing remotely interesting about her character, and her performance was barely competent.

Hopefully, there's better things to come.

Yes, I most definitely know what you mean. I found Bella very stiff and awkward in Dark Shadows, too. In particular, the scene where she's walking along the rocks with Johnny Depp. It was as if she was reading the lines.
Saying that, she has a very distinct face, with beautiful big eyes.
