His character in The Martian
Anyone notice his character was kind of like Troy as Abed in Community?

shareYes! I said exactly the same thing. Even did that finger point thing
shareAnd the stare into space thing.
shareAll I can say, is that exact as with Mackenzie Davis, he's casting was completely out of place for this movie.
When you take a movie like this, and see persons like Donald Glover and Mackenzie Davis mixed in, it seriously feels like its something that is pressed in - even though it does not fit - only in order to appeal to the teenage crowd.
I am so sad that Hollywood still does this, and have had success with doing it for two generations now. I really hope that they will stop this nonsense, and start casting as they did back in 70-80 and mid 90's, where casted actors usually fit into the whole movie and its theme.
As with Mackenzie Davis, I am in no way suggesting that these are bad actors by the way. They just didnt fit into the movie. And as a side note - the whole character that Donald Glover played was out of place as well. It was put in in a stupid way, and did not contribute with anything clever. If it did, it was cleverly stupidity.
Who is Mackenzie Davis outside of this movie? I never saw her before this movie and didn't really notice anything out of place with her.
shareShe was the satellite communications operator at NASA. To me, she felt very out of place.
Its because Donald glover is egocentric...he tries to do everyything. I tried watching his stand up special..first thing he said was
"How many of you know me from my show, Community?"
Yeah...HIS show...The next hour he proceeded to talk about what other roles he was auditioning for and his music. If I paid any amount of
money to watch that s*** I would be really really upset. I imagine after hanging out with this guy for an hour you would know every single thing about him...because he would tell you..
to be fair...this is how actors survive. This is how they get roles - being a bit egocentric. You really don't believe an artist gets a role 'just because' right? Artists are looked at for 'what are you bringing to the table'. Yes, Donald may toot his own horn and I don't blame him. It's how you are remembered...
I mean, look at Gal Gadot. She's a beauty but she's not what I would consider for the role of Wonder Woman. She's not an American and weren't there American actresses up for the role? Yet, Gal was chosen. Gal comes with that F&F franchise audience so they will show up. People remember her because of what she's bringing to the table - the F&F demographic audience. She will help get folks in seats.
So, don't be so hard on Donald. He's doing his job to stay alive as an actor and I wish him well. Looking forward to seeing him AND Gal on the screen!

I thought his character in THE MARTIAN (excellent movie, btw) was hilarious and really provided some brief comic relief, plus I thought it was cool that his character came up with the final solution to rescue the astronaut. Nothing "out of place" about his character at all, or the other actress you mentioned--he just seemed like a atypical geek to me. I also thought the head of the program had no business telling him to get out of there, seeing as no one had yet come up with something that up til then, no one had come up with anything else.
