The Harvey Weinstein effect

She may be the most clear example of someone who was getting top billing and roles because of Weinstein. After Weinstein fell so has her career. She is still getting roles but a far cry from how it was before, she is basically working with much lesser known directors and now that her run with X-Men is done her mainstream spot is over.

reply

Uh, no. At most he campaigned for her second Oscar nom and other awards for Silver Linings, and that is literally all he ever did for her career. She made exactly one film he had anything to do with, and it was the director who picked her for the role, not Weinstein. By that time she was already an up and coming star with one Oscar nomination under her belt and two big buck franchise contracts.

As for the current state of her career, she said repeatedly years ago that she planned on taking a break, and that break was extended by the fact that she got married and then a pandemic happened. Now, by choice, she's working mostly on small budget indie films like the ones she started on. (Although Adam McKay, with whom she has two projects, is hardly a "lesser known director".)

We honestly don't know the true amount of help Weinstein gave Lawrence or the level of quid pro quo that was involved (if any). But let's not forget that as scummy and predatory as guys like Weinstein are, trading favors for casting killed careers of other actresses who didn't play the game, and those actresses are also culpable.

reply

If our beliefs are based on evidence and not gossip, we do indeed know the "true amount" of help Weinstein gave Lawrence: she was involved with exactly one film he produced, she got the part because the director chose her (not Weinstein), and his only boost to her career came from campaigning for her during awards season, which was not selfless but advanced his own agenda as well as hers.

reply

Oh, OK...

reply

So you're willfully dense.

reply

I base my views on verifiable, objective evidence instead of gossip. You should try it some time.

reply

Yeah I fapped to some of that objective evidence.

reply

What you did was jerk off to stolen private photo's meant for her boyfriend, which means you participated in a sex crime. Feeling real good about yourself, I'm sure.

Got nothing to do with Weinstein. But I'm you aren't the sort to let reality get in the way.

reply

which means you participated in a sex crime.

Whoa, there may or may have not been a crime (intentionally leaked?), but if there was, it was whoever hacked or shared the pictures.

reply

There was a crime and the hacker responsible went to jail for it. Nevertheless, anyone who jerked off to those stolen pictures is a worthless sleaze bag who participated in the crime in a very real sense even if it unfortunately happens to be legal.

reply

I honestly think the poster was pulling your chain (so to speak), but even if he did, that's far less a crime in my mind than those scums that pleasure themselves to pre-teen "beauty" contestants. They're out there..

reply

That whole genre of pageant is creepy. Even the parents freak me out.

reply

Tiger moms. Living their lives vicariously through their kids. Sad.

reply

How can a crime be legal? That's just dumb.

reply

How can a crime be legal?

I agree with you, but for argument's sake, I agree with the poster that some things can be legal and still be a "crime". Some things that are clearly immoral and a crime against humanity are not legal crimes. This particular case involving Lawrence isn't one of them IMO, but I'm not against describing something as a "crime" that is currently legal.

reply

Doesn't there usually have yo be a victim for a crime... So if I jerk off to her pictures... And nobody knows if I'm joking or not ...which makes it hard to he a victim m...I still committed ba crime? What about if I jerk it to her movies? Is that a crime too?

reply

If you jerk off to pictures that were stolen, you are a worthless maggot. You might not be committing a crime, but boy would I love it for possession of stolen photographs to be a crime. Either way, you are a participant in something that caused grave emotional harm to several innocent women.

reply

They don't look innocent to me. Guess its a good thing being a dirty slut isn't a crime either.

reply

My point being.... If being immoral is a crime then these women possing for the pictures are committing crimes too.

reply

Oh, so you jerk off to pictures stolen from women without their consent, and apparently think you're just fine, but they are the immoral ones for taking sexy pictures for their boyfriends.

You're both an idiot and a maggot.

reply

Yes. She should save herself for marriage.

reply

Why does it have to be "either or". Why can't we both be the immoral ones?

Why do you leftist view everything as a competition? It makes it seems disingenuous when you claim to actually care about people.

reply

Possibly a part. but also her career shows a clear decline and downfall and I doubt any studio is willing to pay what she wants.

-So she does Winter bone. gets some big attention for it which allows her to land both Xmen and hunger games. Silver lining then comes out which is well received. She then does the second hunger games and American hustle. by now he clout has grown and she starts to become more demanding. TO the point they change mystique in Xmen's entire character to please Lawrence so she doesn't have to get in makeup as much

-The first cracks start to show in Serena and what happens when she is a lead/colead and supposed to carry a film. It was a massive flop. making 5 million on a 30 million dollar budget. You could see it in American Hustle. All the other coleads act circles around her and while they can maintain thiers, she can barely keep up her simple accent in a short 5 second take. Going from a strong accent to normal Lawrence. She "seemed good" because of how "crazy and nuts" she was and good directing and editing. But if you rewatch it its really nothing that amazing. especially when you compare to the others.

-the next two hunger games come out which finish off her high paying solid box office success carreer. Next up Joy comes out.a 60% on RT and making 110 million on a 60 million dollar budget. That is a flop and it did not make money.. Xmen apocalypse comes out. They have almost fully gotten rid of the makeup to suit Jennifers demands and she is essentially the protagonist. it makes 540 million on 180 million. Most of which is foreign box office (which the studio gets a smaller cut) and doesn't include advertising which I remember was all over the place.its lucky if it broke even I doubt it...

-while she had the successes of the big franchises, her career as show is already fully in decline starting with Serena, we just didn't know it yet. She's demanding massive salary, including 20 million for passengers, but not delivery at the Box office. it made 300 million on 110. almost 1/5 of the budget being her salary. some rough math the studio made 150 million tops tops...

-Mother! comes out and it Ames 44 million on a 30 million dollar budget. flop Red sparrow makes 150 million on 70 million. flop.

Hell even her normally reliable big movie franchises, xmen, flops when phoenix brings in 250 million on 200 million.

seeing these numbers, who in their right mind would ever want Jenifer as a lead?

Her last 6 movies are all either flops or break even. Her last money making movie was the hunger games in 2015..

reply

How are plus flops?

They say Weinstein successfully ruined careers, he had enough pull to make hollywood blacklist actresses. If he could ruin them then he could build them. One of the main reasons he got away with it so long. A real big wig.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that he had a big hand to play in Jennifer Lawrence becoming a big star and winning awards and that with his downfall she didn't have a helping hand.

It's also worth mentioning she was the celeb worst hit in 'the fappening'. She was probably the biggest star with leaks and hers were amongst the most numerous and explicit. It definitely damaged her public image. She went from being viewed as a loveable goofball to being seen as a dirty skank.

reply

I think her downfall was less about that, but rather she took lousy advice and publicly took a political stance that was not in-line with mainstream America and she took a big hit for that. She basically publicly disown her parents because they supported Donald Trump and she didn't. Great way to alienate her family and half the country, who were probably her biggest supporters. IMO, she is now the poster child for what not to do if you depend on your public brand for your income. Rising stars should do their very best to stay away from politics, because regardless of which side they choose, they are instantly going to lose millions of fans.
