The Columbus Holiday is a fucking joke. He has nothing to do with the United States historically, culturally, or economically. General Custard has more historic significance to American History than this Genoan mercenary working for the Spain at the time.
The only reason there's a holiday is because the Knights of Columbus pulled the strings several decades ago and got congress to create a holiday. Italian Americans of today like to honor him and feel affiliated with his historicity BUT in reality he was never Italian as the nation of Italy never existed.

shareI'm from and currently live in Columbus, Ohio. And I am very proud of my city and how much it has grown and how it is projected to grow to three times its size in ten years! Now saying that, I can honestly say that I am on the fence on Christopher Columbus. I don't know WHAT to believe! But as an advocate of Cristin's, Italian's can disagree with other Italian's. You said it yourself by calling her an Italian American. And as an American with free will, she has the right to disagree with other Italian's. That is how I see it.
