I appreciate the explanation. I guess I'm glad she didn't get an Ellis Island/Hollywood job and switch it to Mia Green or something. It's 2016 after all. But it's gonna take some practice to pronounce it right and it makes googling her tough too cause I can't spell it. I keep getting sexy pictures of washing machines. And is it Mee-uh or My-uh?

Wasikowska is her mother's name. I believe her father's name was Reid, so she could well have ended up as "Mia Reid." On balance, that probably would have helped her career, losing a bit of superficial "Euro" art house credibility but gaining ease of mass-audience recognition.

That definitely would have been easier for most non-europeans. She went through 7 or 8 years of ballet training - I think a polish last name would have fit in perfectly for a ballerina.
