First Impression of Ms. Gerwig: A Gracious Friend to Have
My first exposure to Ms. Gerwig was in Ti West's film, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1172994/(The House of the Devil).
Greta played Megan, a dear friend to lead actress Jocelin Donahue (Samantha). Megan was enjoying her pizza (munch, munch) while talking to Samantha about a baby-sitting job Samantha had accepted.
Megan (Ms. Gerwig) insisted she accompanied Samantha to check out the gig because Megan wanted to make sure that her friend Samantha (Ms. Donahue) was going to be safe. (Samantha took the baby-sitting job because it paid well and as a new struggling college student she could use the extra cash.)
So, Samantha and Megan take Megan's little Volvo and drive out to an old house in the country to meet the, uh, well, "eccentric" owners. Samantha checks out the house with the owners while Megan samples a snack while she waits for Samantha. Apparently the treat was a bit stale because Megan makes a "Yuck!" face.
From the first time we see Ms. Gerwig she's talking (with her mouth full of pizza). Then we see her sampling the snacks on the coffee table while waiting for Samantha. Later, she puts other things in her mouth but you'll have to see the movie to find out what those were.
I'm rambling so I will wrap this up and say that Megan was an exceptional friend to Samantha: Driving her to her job, making sure everything seemed okay and that Samantha was going to be safe in this big old house in the middle of nowhere, offering to come get her if Samantha needed her for any reason, and also pick Samantha up when the owners returned.
Well, this being a scary movie, eventually scary things happen.
But Greta Gerwig - talking with her mouth full of pizza (mannerly, of course) yet devoting her full attention to her friend - was utterly charming. She displayed a seriousness of kind devotion to her friend while simultaneously being humorous.
Ms. Gerwig showed a natural attractiveness I haven't seen in an actress for quite a while, and I wish her the best.
P.S. I also love the direction Mr. Ti West is taking with his horror canon (I loved http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1594562/(The Innkeepers), too). There's something about Mr. West's style that is unique. I like his choice of actors, his direction, his pacing, choice of locations, and so forth.
Two young talents I'm keeping an eye on: Mr. West, and Ms. Gerwig. Thank you.
