Greta Gerwig frustrates me.

I will say that as an actress, her work is completely polarizing on a movie-by-movie basis. In Greenberg I think she gave a wonderfully nuanced, and ultimately Oscar-worthy performance, and I will stand by that statement. Though watching her in collaboration with Joe Swanberg, as well as on fellow mumblecore production "Yeast," is like watching nails on a chalkboard. It's almost embarrassing the way in which her face contorts and conforms into truly strange shapes. Her constant whiny demeanor, slurred speech, and persistence to cry at every opportune beat could be considered indulgent. For some actors, mumblecore gives them a safe place to thrive. Greta Gerwig needs the stable hand of a seasoned pro, such as Baumbauch. Hopefully she wont fall back onto such tropes, seeing as she's truly gifted.
