A renewed push to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom has attracted more than 1 million signatures, with 9 weeks left to collect the remaining 500,000 needed to place the measure on the ballot.

Overall, the effort needs roughly 1.5 million people to sign on by mid-March, which would trigger a mid-year election.

"The people are being heard loud and clear, and it is not a matter of IF we are going to reach our goal necessary that will trigger a recall election of Newsom, it is just when we cross the finish line," Orrin Heatlie, the Lead Proponent of the official RecallGavin2020.com, said in a statement.

Economy suggested supporters of the movement believe the governor mismanaged the coronavirus situation, adding that many small business owners in the state – like restaurant, boutique shop owners – have completely lost their livelihoods, while big-box stores, like Target, have been allowed to remain open.

Democrats face backlash for calling Newsom recall effort a ‘California coup’

The California Democratic Party is facing backlash after referring to the campaign to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom as a “coup” nearly a week after the violent pro-Trump insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

“This recall effort, which really ought to be called the California coup, is being led by right-wing conspiracy theorists, white nationalists, anti-vaxxers in groups who encourage violence on our democratic institutions,” said Rusty Hicks, chairman of the California Democratic Party. “Today we’re here to say enough is enough is enough.”

Hicks and other Democratic leaders, described in a party press release as the “Defending Against The California Coup” coalition, held a midday Zoom event with reporters in which they alleged ties between the backers of the recall effort and those who overtook the Capitol on Jan. 6.

Hicks did not provide details or evidence to back up the assertions made during the news conference. A spokesman for Newsom did not respond to a request for comment about the party calling the recall effort a coup.

3 of those signatures are from my family. Dad can't sign because he's afraid his power company would suffer as a result, and they're already a scapegoat for all the wildfires we've had in recent years.

Supposedly the petition has 1.2M signatures now.

Newsom claims lifting lockdown isn't 'political' but critics point to recall threat

Republicans said Newsom was easing the rules as the recall campaign nears the required threshold to qualify for a statewide ballot. Organizers have until mid-March to gather 1.5 million signatures to force a recall against Newsom, who is halfway through his first term.

"This Governor's decisions have never been based on science. Him re-opening our state is not an attempt to help working Californians, but rather an attempt to counter the Recall Movement. It's sad and pathetic," California Republican Party Chairwoman Jessica Millan Patterson tweeted.

State officials said the decision to lift the stay-at-home order came amid improving trends in California's rate of infections, hospitalizations, and intensive care unit capacity as well as vaccinations. But Newsom’s administration has not made the data public. Health officials have said making it public would confuse and potentially mislead the public.

Oh I'd totally agree about the political implications behind his actions. See, the number of people wanting to see him recalled is mounting, and he's getting nervous, because he now realizes just how many Californians he's pissed off after nearly a year of bullshit lockdowns. He just assumed we're all a bunch of idiot sheep who would let him do whatever he liked, and reality is telling him a different story.
