Bad mixed accent in Constantine

His acting is great, but his acting is bad!!!! He's supposed to be from Liverpool, the actor is actually from Swansea, his accent in this show is a mix between Swansea & Yorkshire with a bit of Irish brogue thrown in now and again for good measure! Not a hint of Scouse (Liverpool), so either this guy is really bad at accents, or he's been directed to do it like this for the American audience who probably won't understand a Scouse accent without subtitles! Confusing to say the least!!
PS I am British mongrel (English, Scottish, Welsh & Irish) and have a good ear for most dialects.

I figure he just said Liverpool to justify his knowledge of coal mining to the ex priest. Seems like the kind of b.s. he would need to constantly spout in his line of work. He could tell somebody he was Welsh one week and a northerner the next, whatever for the job. Most people probably wouldn't know the difference anyway.

His accent is fine. There are many different scouse accents and his sounds mild scouse to me. Doesn't sound Welsh at all aside from a few words now and again. Anyway, for someone who has lived all over the world it would make sense that he wouldn't retain his scouse accent.

I haven't read the comics and don't know the details of Constantine's background but my impression of the scene was that he lied about growing up in Liverpool just to get in with the miners. I'm an American but spent some formative years living in London and although I can distinguish a southern English accent from a northern one, I can't really make out more specific regional differences (i.e. Brummie vs. Scouse vs. any area other than London). I think to the general American audience, his accent sounds consistent -- that is, consistently "British."

reply

In the original comic books, he was definitely a Scouser. Which to British ears sounds quite different from Brummie or Geordie, for example.

Ryan has the look and can act. As American, I am just happy they cast a British actor, not another American.

I just turned this on for the first time and am an x pat living in the states, heard him speak and thought what is that accent. So I came here to see what everyone else thought, my family live in merseyside and that's not any scouse accent I have heard. It's definitely leaning towards Irish. Scouse is very distinctive, it should be easy to mimick, even if they make it light for US audiences.

I think we should be happy American v execs allowed him to be northern at all. I imagine Liverpool was a stretch too far. The execs always fear people won't understand the accent. I am surprised he didn't end up a Londoner.

reply

Yep! I deffo agree with what you've wrote. I have a mild scouse accent and so does, Mr Ryan. Snipits of welsh here and there... and that's about it.
We have the right ears. Lol :D
