I've seen some fanfiction videos and he was there as Peeta (the Hunger games trilogy). It's just my opinion but I really don't think he suits the character. And he's not cute in my opinion and maybe I'm the only one but I definitely find Josh Hutcherson cute no matter what color his hair is.

I don't think it was a case that he wasn't cute enough (because in my personal opinion he is, but hey beauty is in the eye of the beholder). When I saw "The Hunger Games" Alex just didn't seem right for the part period.
I read somewhere that a producer or casting director said that Alex turned down some of these roles because a lot of the characters are teenagers and at 23 he doesn't want to be playing teenagers anymore which makes sense hence why he did "Magic Mike".
Some people may actually dispute this and say "well he did Endless Love after Magic Mike". If you look at the original movie you will see that at the time it was considered very adult in its content, but nowadays this kind of movie is now considered tame plus it spreads over a ten year period.
Alex just does not want to do YA. Endless Love is an iconic novel and a notorious icon movie. The trailer looks good. I don't think Alex would suit the part of Peeta. Maybe he auditioned but that's what actors do to keep working.
