Personally, I don't get the appeal of Alex Pettyfer. He's an extremely attractive guy but I haven't been blown away by any of his performances. Of course, I don't think he's performed in anything of any real gravitas... so that might explain why. Magic Mike (I haven't seen it) seemed to have been received relatively well by critics, though I don't recall reading a review that said AP was the standout performer. It looks like he got by in that movie and played his part.
It's important to realise that Hollywood and the film industry has a strange way of working. It's a little similar to the way you or I might apply for a job: you need some reasonable credentials on your CV and to deliver a knockout performance in the interview (audition). Alex is still establishing himself in the film industry, so he probably doesn't have the luxury of cherry-picking his projects. Most probably he's taking what he can get... although maybe with the exception that he can say, "This one looks terrible so I don't want to do that. This one has some decent actors/screenwriters attached to it, so I'll have a look at it."
Not sure if any of you are familiar with Logan Lerman, but he recently gave some really good insight into a lengthy interview. I feel that I can comfortably say that Lerman is more established than Pettyfer in the US. He's been acting there for quite some time now, and been in a few (critically) well-received projects. Still, he's still auditioning with the rest of them... it makes sense that Pettyfer would be on a level (if not lower) playing field.

All that aside, I've gotta admit: I'm surprised he turned down TMI. Maybe he thought he was already apart of a potentially large franchise - I Am Number Four - and wanted to steer clear of the fantasy-world realm? Who knows? I definitely think he LOOKS the part of Jace, but I couldn't say the same for his acting chops. Honestly, I think if they had cast himself/Lily Collins in the lead role, the film would have tanked (on a critic level) - no doubt fans would have still rallied to watch them all. Not sure if it's wishful thinking but I do believe JCB might be able to bring more to the role.
