It seems like he has been blacklisted from Hollywood. The last time you heard he was going to be in a notable film was Magic Mike. His career seems to have spiraled downwards from there on. Sure, he did Endless Love but that film really was terrible. It had low expectations from the studio anyway. He had a small role in The Butler and he isn't even THE LEAD in Elvis and Nixon. Has he been blacklisted from Hollywood due to his antics?
Fully aware of his horrendous reputation. But in fairness, I don't think he is 'just a pretty face'. I think he could be a good actor. But yea, guy threw away a decent shot.
Fully agreed. He has improved as an actor. I don't think he'll ever become an award-winning actor but I do think he has the potential to become a respectable actor.
As far as his reputation is concerned, I have heard he has mellowed out a bit recently. It's a shame because he is a really attractive man. Honestly, someone you could see being the Sexiest Man Alive.
If he has, once he's worked on his attitude and reputation, I could see him making a comeback by doing smaller films and gaining a new respect through them.

He had all the trappings of a potential teen fantasy heartthrob: hot, British, great cheekbones, but he failed to become the next Robert Pattinson. His first major film was also his first flop: I Am Number Four, based on the first book of the series in the Lorien Legacies series. While it did well at the box office, it got terrible reviews and the franchise was abandoned. Things only went downhill from there.
Next, there was the awful Beauty and the Beast retelling Beastly, in which Pettyfer plays a “beast” with lots of tattoos and scars on his face opposite Vanessa Hudgens’ beauty.
In 2012, he booked a lead role in Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike, which could have been his second chance. However, by then, he had gotten a reputation as being difficult to work with, and wasn’t asked back for Magic Mike XXL because he feuded with star Channing Tatum.
In the late aughts, British star Alex Pettyfer was poised to be a Next Big Thing. He was the lead in "Stormbreaker," positioning him for a breakout moment, but a string of disappointments followed. Roles in supernatural romance "Beastly" and alien-invasion YA film "I Am Number Four" failed to get Pettyfer to household name status despite predictions from Access Hollywood, and though he had a major role in "Magic Mike," he wasn't invited back for the sequel.
So, what went wrong? When his career failed to reach the heights he'd been predicted to reach, the entertainment press reported on widespread rumors of difficult behavior. The Hollywood Reporter published an exposé filled with reports that the actor was allegedly "a nightmare" to work with. Pettyfer later admitted to a feud with "Magic Mike" co-star Channing Tatum, explaining Bret Easton Ellis' podcast (via The Guardian) that he'd rented an apartment from Tatum's friend and then refused to pay rent. "[Channing] had already told everyone he didn't like me, and what Channing says goes because he's a movie star," Pettyfer said.
In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, Pettyfer discussed his youthful mistakes. "If I had the experience that I had today back then, I probably would have done things differently," he reflected. "But the reason that I'm the man I am today is because of the experiences I endured [when working as an actor] as a young boy."
Simple truth is that he was one of those "pretty faces" that Hollywood tried to make happen. Like new teen idol. But that "I Am Number Four" flopped after they put so much effort for it to become new franchise. Studios saw that he has no potential as new teen idol. And stopped casting him. Happens all the time to actors.
That fact that he was a douche before even hitting that projected stardom didnt help his case.
Honestly, some people don't know what "blacklisted" means these days! They totally confuse it with movie studios thinking someone isn't worth the money or trouble they cost.
Film actors are all free-lancers. That means that if they don't generate profits and get on with the right people, they don't get offers, and Pettyfer did neither.
It happens to actresses all the time too. Hollywood tries to make them happen based on their looks. It doesnt work and Hollywood forgets about them and they vanish from spotlight.
What was unique and funny with this guy is that they told him he was a star in the making and cast him in "future franchise". And he was preparing himself for that "inevitable" stardom and teen idol status. He thought he was gonna become Robert Pattinson the day that movie will come out and all those teen girl would see how hot he is. And will run and lust for him. And was behaving like spoiled teen hearthtorb.
And then movie came and nobody cared :) It flopped and franchise was dead. It was glorious and hilarious.
Reminds like when Elvis was still shooting but everyone knew it would be big and Austin Butler will get attention. But Austin was not behaving like a megastar before it came out. He was humble. While Pettyfer was all : "I am a star. Im ready for those girls running and lusting for me. After all I a so hot".
Interesting comparison, because Pattinson's "Twilight" films made him a joke! He actually had to spend years making Indies for pocket change and conducting himself like an adult, before anyone took him seriously enough to give him another crack at big-budget franchise films. But he put in his time in low-budget films and worked on his skills, and now he's a hot property again, and is respected in a way he wasn't when he was in his twenties.
Because Pattinson was huge star - he was cast in all those films in leading roles. Those movies received budgets on his name. Pettyfer is nobody and no one cast him. Pattinson was allowed to fail since Twilight movies came every year and he was relevant. He had millions of fan girls who stood up behind him.
Pattinson could sit, read 20 scripts and chose what he wanted to star in. Pettyfer didnt have it and was auditioning at whatever agent could book him.
