How does an american self-admit themselves in to a mental hospital?

People say that Ye should self-admit to a mental hospital. How exactly does this work in the USA? If a person self-admits themselves to a mental hospital do they have to pay for their stay in that mental hospital. If a person self admitted would he just watch television and read books inside the mental hospital?

I've never done it so I don't know the details. But I do know it's preferable to being forcibly admitted. In the latter case you can lose certain rights for a period of time, like losing the ability to buy a gun for a year or more.
