What Happened to Fan Bingbing, China’s Most Famous Actress?

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/13/world/asia/china-fan-bingbing.html

Fan Bingbing is arguably the most famous actress in China, a prolific star who has made the leap to international fame with roles in the “Iron Man” and “X-Men” franchises. She appeared in Cannes in May to promote a coming spy blockbuster with Jessica Chastain, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz and Lupita Nyong’o.

Ms. Fan, who turns 37 on Sunday, has dropped out of public view for more than three months — the victim of a sudden and precipitous fall from grace.

Ms. Fan’s disappearance appears to be related to a government investigation into tax evasion in the film business, but she has not been charged with any crime, and no officials have confirmed that she is even under investigation. Few who know her, or the industry, believe it is simply a matter of paying taxes, though. And the damage to her reputation — and perhaps her livelihood — has already been done.

Her name was abruptly removed from the posters for a Chinese production starring Bruce Willis, known in English as “Unbreakable Spirit,” about the Japanese bombing of China’s wartime capital, Chongqing, from 1938 to 1943.

Ms. Fan denied the accusation of tax evasion — as has Mr. Feng — but she has stopped posting on her Weibo account since the tax investigation was announced. Nor has she updated her verified Twitter and Facebook accounts since she was in Cannes in May. There have been rumors of her arrest or detention — or even her flight from China.

Keep this to yourself, but rumor is that the Chinese have invented a time travel device and whenever a citizen does something that reflects badly on the Republic, they go back in time and make sure that person is...NEVER BORN!!!! DUNT-DUNT-DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNN!

reply

Rumor is that she's in jail for tax evasion.

reply

She was Blingblinging it all the way to the Cayman Cannes island to deposit her tax evasion checks which she is a big Fan of I hear.

This is what happens when you work in communist China. Don't feel sorry for her one bit. They can easily make you disappear for simple tax evasion or kidnap you if you have a difference of opinion than the general CCP info they propaganda out.

reply

Yeah but evading taxes by having two contracts (the smaller one used to report earnings and pay taxes on) is standard practice in the Chinese movie industry. What she did with regards to tax evasion wasn't at all out of the ordinary. This was a personal vendetta by a CCTV presenter (jealousy?) who was responsible for leaking her contracts and encouraging authorities to pursue her.

You don't feel sorry for victims of authoritarian regimes who are just earning a living in their native born countries? Jesus, then what exactly would earn your sympathy?

That CDAN creep is the biggest damn liar on the internet.

reply

Wait, whose CDAN? I was kind of skeptical of clicking on TMC's links as they look malicious in nature due to the naming scheme like ones you would see in spam emails (sorta imo).

reply

Yeah, that CDAN, Crazydaysandnights, "Entertainment Lawyer" guy is a massive liar. I used to believe his items as much as I believed any blind item, then I found out he gets things wrong, makes stuff up, posts tips he gets from trolls and obsessed wackos, and writes adult fan fiction and calls it blind items.

Don't believe a word you hear from that particular source.

reply

I don't believe his posts because his refs are often trashy gossip sites. I tried to verify the "hiding out" theory and found nothing.
