Why are so many people ragging on Tony Jaa?
It honestly disheartens me to see so many people say Tony Jaa is overrated or wasting his talent, etc. As far as I'm concerned, Tony is a living legend and one of the few onscreen martial artists who seems like a very humble, genuinely kind human being in real life. Tony delivered one of the best fight films *of all time* with "The Protector"; the pressure to continually top himself with each film has to be overwhelming, not to mention all the gangsters involved in the Thai film industry. Can you really blame him for wanting to take time away from the entertainment industry? Now he's back and fans should be grateful! I can't wait to see what he does teamed up with Jeeja Yanin ("Chocolate").
I just feel like people so easily forget...before the original "Ong Bak," action films were becoming increasingly over-choreographed and reliant on wires. Pure fantasy. Tony Jaa helped bring things back to reality and put the emphasis on no wires, no stuntmen, just pure skill. Tony made SO many actors step up their game, such as Donnie Yen, and helped turn the past several years into one of the best eras EVER for fight choreography.
Tony Jaa is at least partially responsible for the return of thought-out fight choreography and non-CG assisted stunts, as well as the addition of parkour elements, into international action cinema. As far as I'm concerned, he is still the best martial artist working in film today!
