Why does he always play messed up characters?

In the House at the End of the Street and Bates Motel Thieriot plays really messed up characters and he's totally believable. Even as a kid in The Pacifier he seemed like a disturbed kid at first and I totally bought it.

He's kind of messed up in My Soul To Take too... and in Disconnect. Sort of.
