I did not support this war when it was happenning, and in fact was against it before it even started because when Biden started predicting Putin would invade, the reason that he could predict that is because he, or rather Zelensky and his nationalist militia who had been attacking Donbas was ramping up the number of artillery barrages killing ethnic Russians every day in southeast Ukraine.
This increase in artillery was goading Putin to attack, and so Putin put it in a legal format - which Americans never were made aware of, and he brought in his special military operation.
He sent in less than 200,000 Russian troops ( against a NATO equipped and trained Ukrainian army of 800,000 ) to stop the attacks and defend the ethnic Russians in Donbas - and then the US started talking about how it was an invasion of Europe to re-establish the Soviet Union - which was complete BS.
I don't really support the war, but in a way I am not so unhappy about it because what is going on in the world today is a challenging of the US dominance and the US must respond. The reason for Ukraine was to oust Russia from economic trade with the EU to avoid a future where Russia becomes the primary trading partner with the EU and the US loses influence.
Must as I criticize America - I have to say that there is no other power block that would do a better job. Certainly not Russia, or China, or any nascent disgusting Islamic Caliphate.
Bottom line is that this was nothing Russia or Putin did to deserve to be attacked anywhere, nor in Ukraine. This was Great Power Politics as John Mearsheimer said 8 YEARS BEFORE THE WAR EVEN BROKE OUT!

Maybe if Ukraine sent death squads into Russia in January 2022 and slaughtered 1000+ Russians in Belgorod this comparison might make some degree of sense. The only reason Ukraine re-arming would be a threat to Russia would be because they occupy their land, and they want it back.

They're rooted in false premises. Ukraine wasn't attacking Russia, wasn't planning on attacking Russia - and if it did, it wouldn't be supported by anyone.

And then landgrabbed areas outside of the Donbass, and then held obvious sham referendums themselves.
Keep in mind that the old Luhansk and Donetsk 'republics' (with stooges from Russia in high positions, of note) only controlled around 1/3-4 of the Donbass area in the first place.

Russia wasn't claiming Donbass as their own then. The idea that they planned to take it to Crimea is debateable, and would be highly dangerous for Ukraine to attempt on their own given Russia as literally being a nuclear power.
Russia doesn't even claim that they were pre-emptively attacking to prevent an attack on Crimea.
