BC double is filming Avengers: Infinity War

Broadway actor Aaron Lazar is being filmed in Georgia for the new “Avengers: Infinity War,” but viewers of the movie won’t get to see his handsome face.

Lazar — whose credits include “Les Misérables” and “The Last Ship” — is the body double for Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), who is busy playing Thomas Edison in “The Current War,” about the inventor’s competition with George Westinghouse to electrify America.

When he’s done with the Edison flick, Cumberbatch will reshoot scenes where the face of the 6-foot-1 Lazar, a track star in discus at Duke, is seen. A Disney source said, “They are not digitally superimposing Cumberbatch onto another actor’s performance.”

He doesn't talk in those scenes, I guess.

Actually they could shoot other actor talking to him with, the double from the back, and later shoot him answering.

We will be able to tell.

Arthur, put the kettle on and dig out those lemon hand wipes.

There were people on Twitter wondering how they're going to do this because the two actors look nothing alike. I think they only read the headline and didn't actually read the story.

I think this is pretty common when filming lots of action - the stunt person does the scene and the actor only steps in when his face is going to show. But for Benedict, this is probably unusual because he likes to do those scenes himself. In one of the behind-the-scenes videos of TLD, Sue Vertue said that the stuntman was there for the filming, but Benedict decided to do it himself. We saw the stuntman on the floor to set up the scene, but then Martin "beat up" Benedict when the cameras rolled.

He is not a stuntman, he is a double. It's not the same. He will be there to show Doctor Strange is there but in shots in which we will not see his face. Later BC will complete the work in the shots the character has lines or has to show his face.

I just saw a few articles suggesting the double will shoot all the movie! Are those film sites really so ignorant about film production? Or click-baiting is more important than not looking stupid?

Having doubles is very common! And using one for BC in this early days suggest that a)They really couldn't arrange his schedule with the schedule of the people who would be with him in those scenes or/and b) His role in the movies is so big that they needed him in a lot of scenes. The shooting period is huge so it's not like the few weeks of shooting an indie film will affect the Marvel movie too much. Also Spider-Man is with him so probably he also has a double.

OT: the only images of the behind of scenes of The Current War we have are actually of and by Spider-Man himself,

Yes, we will! 

It's a little disappointing to me that they are doing this, though I know films do this all the time, and understand why they might need to do this in this case.

But selfishly, as a fan of BC and his acting: his posture, his little movements, all those things add to his performance and add depth that I enjoy. Picking up little things, like how he held his head, or shifted his weight at a particular moment, are the little pleasures of watching his work. (I know it's not all one seamless take in film-making, that the different takes and over the shoulder shots get edited together, so I know not every little stance or movement is all pre-planned and thought out. But it's fun to appreciate the ones that seem to work well)

It always takes me out of a scene for a few seconds when I can pick up that a stand-in or a stuntman made it to the final cut. Sherlock's fight with the Golem in The Great Game is one example of a scene where bits are obviously not BC, that took me out of the moment.

Have a lovely day - John Finnemore

Or the bits in STID where the stunt double throws the knife etc in that fight with the Klingons.
