What's up with Flying Horse?

Last I heard, this project didn't get enough funding but The Guardian has a blurb about it in its 2017 write up..

Flying Horse
Gary Oldman’s first film as director in 20 years, and only his second ever, is a biopic of the pioneering 19th-century photographer Eadweard Muybridge, focusing on the affair between his wife, Flora, and Harry Larkyns, the theatre critic he kills. No casting confirmed, but Oldman had been chasing Ralph Fiennes and Benedict Cumberbatch. The man himself will play Muybridge’s prosecutor.

Wow! It would be great if Oldman can finally do it with his dream cast.

That really is surprising?

I was always quite interested in "Flying Horse" as a project and was quite disappointed when nothing materialised. I'm not entirely sure of the order of things now, but last I recall, I think, was an apparent confirmation of funding, rather than failure of funding. That just seemingly came too late to save the intended production arranged for early 2014 that Ralph Fiennes effectively confirmed at the time with his confirmation of why he'd grown a full beard.

I don't know about anyone else, but with nothing having been heard of it for so long, I'd assumed it was effectively defunct as per other Gary Oldman projects over the years. Everyone involved went on with other jobs, and at some point (on IMDB at least), the BC and RF attachments were quietly dropped (although it's never clear whether any such changes are official in any way). Yet the Guardian isn't just quoting "Flying Horse" as still a live project but that it's specifically intended for release in 2017! Usually one would assume that info to've just been taken from IMDB, but there's no theoretical date at all on the IMDB page let alone 2017. And when they've actually made a point of saying other inclusions aren't necessarily certainties, it does make one think there's half a chance they actually do know something about it. And whether relevant or not, both Gary Oldman and Ralph Fiennes look as if their schedules could allow for it shortly. Gary Oldman started filming "Darkest Hour", the Churchill film, at the beginning of December (very interested in that), but there's nothing scheduled after it. And an intended production late February/March would/could still be in time for a 2017 intended release. If it does happen though (and it's a big "if"), I'm not sure it's too likely that BC will still be involved with that sort of timing.

Likely update noticed on happening to check Gary Oldman's board. Hesterprynne posted there about Gary Oldman speaking at the Actor's Centre in their "Off The Record" series. And that was only on January 3rd, so not long ago, although fractionally seemingly too late to explain the inclusion of "Flying Horse" in that Guardian List in itself. There's only a gap of a week though, and maybe the journalist was aware that GO's been talking about it(?). I'm not sure how likely it is that BC would still be involved now, but I'm interested regardless.

GO apparently mentioned trying to raise money again, although I don't think that he was referring to "Flying Horse" can be taken as an absolute certainty although it's the obvious assumption.

The actor also spoke about how he is trying to raise funds to direct a new film. "I don't want to make another film for the sake of it," he explained, after saying he was aiming to gather £27 million for the movie. "[The cost is down to] the time it takes," he said.

The $27M production (and I'm presuming that would only be production) quoted is an awful lot for a film that doesn't scream money unless it gets Oscar traction. So unless there are names attached (if BC and RF will still do it - RF more likely than BC now), then I don't think he's going to get that money.
