It's a JOKE from the movie Mean Girls .

The main character Cady (played by Lindsay Lohan) moves to America from Africa and befriends a group of popular girls. One of the girls, who is described as being "one of the dumbest girls you will ever meet," asks Cady, "If you're from Africa, why are you white?" to which another girl responds, "Oh my god Karen, you can't just ask people why they're white."

It's a pop culture reference. I shake my head at those who can't identify quotes from Mean Girls.
