He needs a few years to really sell a movie on his own, but he will
He's handsome, charming, magnetic, shows emotions well, and has a strong screen presence, seems like a very nice man in real life too.
The true issue is that he's still "new" and that's when critics are most harsh unless you are the "type" of actor they constantly prop up. It's especially true when someone seems like an "Alpha Male" it just pisses the inner fanboy and fangirl off of bitter people. He needs TIME to become a true product on his own. None of the current actors about his age could have truly sold a movie on their own without some kind of franchise attached, or really outstanding in another way. Movies are changing, and the ones he was in this year didn't have the mass appeal
Blackhat, was a boring movie, nothing could have changed the slow pacing and dull tone. I understand he wanted the experience of working with such a well known director.
In the Heart of The Sea is much better than many are giving it credit for. But, "Moby Dick" is like Frankenstein or Dracula where its been done so many times it's hard to get real interest from people.
I can't tell you how many times in real lie people have said "I like him, but that looks boring." or "I didn't see that advertised" so odd
He's far from over but the next steps he takes are important.
I would suggest he work on smaller dramas with actors who are more well known actors where he pulls back a bit. Someone who has at least 2 decades of being well known.
Look into an FX or AMC series, they have shorter seasons that shouldn't interfere too much with other work and have plenty of respected actors on them. Then people see him each week on a journey.
A comedy, not just a long cameo in one. He is very funny in SNL and seems to really enjoy himself, along with his gift of being physical he would be great.
