You say age aside, I'm willing to bet most female tennis players who have a child will do so late on in their careers, if not after it, so basically after their peak years. That stat is hardly a surprise then, although Kim Clijsters came back from retirement after starting a family to win 3 majors. At 40 years of age though and not seeing a great deal of competitive tennis recently, it's not as if Serena was going to be competing at the very top.

But overall it was probably last match of her career. She would have lost in the next round if she would win here.
She was not playing for 1 year and then expected to power her way? Of course she did. She just cant accept that she is 40 and cant outrun young players. The just need to make her run. But she used to hit those balls so hard that opponents could not respond. Not anymore. And she had nothing more.
She can still play and win match there and there. But no titles.
