Who said Aaron wouldn't get nominated for the Oscar?

It's kind of weird that he won the GG, but didn't get nominated for the Oscar when pretty much all the GG winners did, isn't it? I know this happens sometimes (like with Ben Affleck and Argo), but why?

Aaron isn't entirely favored in Hollywood or with the critics as much as say Leo Dicaprio, Meryl Streep or Michael Shannon are. Aaron got a BAFTA nomination cuz well he's a Brit, they look out for their own. And he got a Golden Globe nomination from the Hollywood FOREIGN Press Association. But within Hollywood itself, he's not exactly royalty. Unlike the BAFTAs and the Globes, the Academy and SAG are Hollywood thus he wasn't nominated. Broadcast Critics is also Hollywood and they too favored Michael Shannon instead.

The BAFTA nomination is no surprise as stated before. But neither was the Golden Globe nomination. The Globes always seem to throw out nominations to actors that most likely won't get an Oscar nod-- only 2 outta the 5 GG Supporting Actor nominees were nominated at the Oscars just last year. Simon Helberg was also nominated at the Globes this year but no Oscar. So, Aaron's nomination wasn't a surprise. However, him winning the Globe was unexpected.

Aaron Taylor's performance was not impressive in of itself. It was impressive mostly because of the fact that it was Aaron playing the character. I mean, who expected him to pull off a role like that? Outside the Kick-Ass movies, he's pretty uncharismatic and doesn't have much screen presence. The fact that no one expected it from him was probably the reason he won. However, his character in Nocturnal Animals had little depth and was more of a caricature. He was convincing as a psychotic killer but he wasn't a charming psycho or at least a somewhat sympathetic one-- like Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs. That's usually what the Academy looks for in a performance: depth or a character with at least a shred of humanity. Michael Shannon's performance had those qualities which is why he got the votes and also, he's very respected in Hollywood.

Besides Kick-Ass, he did receive positive reviews for his portrayal of John Lennon in Nowhere Boy. But, I think his duller roles like in Godzilla have overshadowed that. Besides looking good (I know, shallow, but he did look good), he lacked presence and was boring as hell in that movie. He still has a long way to go to prove himself as an actor. It is an accomplishment that he won the Golden Globe. Even if people were impressed that he could pull off that role, it's not like it's easy to win. I do agree with you for the most part. I hope he continues to grow more as an actor. I'm curious to see his next step; well, besides The Wall, as I have no interest in that film.
