I heard the speech for the first time.
I have no idea where people are getting the racist towards white people vibe or a hate speech of any kind. I think one would have to do a lot of mental gymnastics to come to those conclusions.

shareIts all about the mentality and morals of said person. He called the white race an "Invention". Not sure what that even means. He preached all this bogus pro black crap. The one thing a lot of people don't get is this harsh truth...crime rates, black on black crime etc. Black people make up just under 13% percent of the US population. Yet commit just over 70% of the crime. While white people, who are the majority. Commit around 10% See where things go from there?
Jesse blacked it up for the BET awards and instead of giving a positive and truthful message. It really became this white people suck and always holding us down. It was a award show and room filled with mostly rich black people but don't let the facts get in the way of your truth.
shareThe speech had a very focused, '60s tone to it -- which is why it impressed so many. But to me it sounded less Malcolm X and more Eldridge Cleaver.
Williams has written a number of pieces and articles over the last few years, and they tend to be very on point and their perceptions pretty solid.
So why was I less enthusiastic with his BET speech the other week?

Written words often make a different impression from speech, or even from a reading or dramatic performance of the same words. Context, tone of voice, facial expression, many things. When you watch a video, you don't have the leisure of stopping at a certain point or setting it aside, saying "hmmm" and thinking about it. It is immediate. I think it is interesting how many people have explanations of what he said that are a lot more persuasive to me than his video itself was on my first viewing.
Jesse Williams likes to say he's pro-black, and he mentioned the police who killed Tamir Rice in a "drive by" and then went and had "a sandwich" - and oh how the audience loved that, didn't they Jesse? Okay, he can embellish the actual events if he likes, but if he's so pro-black, why can't he mention, at least once, that they nicknamed Chicago, Chiraq, because of all the black on black killings - killings in RECORD NUMBERS!? I'll tell you why, he doesn't really care about black lives. He's just a brainwashed media puppet, and is using black people and the black cause for personal gain.
I graduated from the college of the streets, I gotta Phd in how to make ends meet.
Agree completely, OP. I think so many people in society are just used to certain Black and Biracial celebs tip-toeing around these issues, that they can't seem to process it when a person decides to advocate for the oppressed, unapologetically.

I draw comparison between Jesse and the Pope. LETS MAKE THE WORLD SAFE FOR PEDOPHILES AND MARTYR THEM!!!
