Talented actor - Paul appreciation thread.

I am a relatively new Paul Wesley fan. It was on TVD that I first really took notice of him as an actor.

I watched TVD S1 & S2 over the last year or so in marathons, and after the ending of S2, was so caught up in the show that I'm now trying to follow S3 as it airs live.

Anyway, as I watched the show, Paul really caught my attention. I think he's a really fantastic actor, and even though I think all of the cast are great, he is the stand out to me. He has been impressing me quite regularly so far in S3 and I've also come to appreciate what he did with his character over the last 2 seasons as well.

Plus, it really seems like Paul is having a blast this season, so that's awesome as well and good for him that he's having fun at work. Oh, and he somehow has tons of chemistry with just about everyone on the show - Nina, Ian, Candice, Joseph Morgan, Claire Holt, especially come to mind.

I think he deserves a thread here on his own board in recognition of his talent - hence why I started this thread to appreciate Paul the actor.

One scene that comes to mind from this year, is the "turn it off" sequence in 3x05. Paul was brilliant in that scene, IMO.

Hi there!
Thanks for this thread! He deserves it!
I happen to agree with what you said. He was great in the particular scene you mentioned! It seems he has a knack for crying scenes or for those where he struggles emotionally over something. He blew my mind for the first time in Episode 9, Season 1 - 'History Repeating', towards the end, when he threw his diary away crying, then Episode 20 same Season, then he did it again in Episode 6, Season 2 - 'Plan B', while breaking up with 'Elena' and he keeps doing this ever since. He is a methodical and consistent actor and completely underestimated imo. The whole real-life romance between Nina and Ian has cast a shadow over everything else. Don't get me wrong. I wish them well. It's just that circumstances have caused a blinding of what is of real value to the show. I hope the writers haven't forgotten about that. As for the current season, I am enjoying him as much as he enjoys playing ripper 'Stefan'!

Judging by the great material they have given Paul this season I don't think we need to worry about that.

I completely agree that Paul is great in emotional scenes. The one that comes to mind is when Damon has just told him he is dying from the werewolf bite (Episode 2x22). The way he looks at Damon when he walks away breaks my heart.

I've mentioned that on another thread but have you taken a look at Paul's hand while Damon walks away in the scene you've just mentioned? I hadn't noticed it at first, but he moves his fingers as a tick, as a reaction to the news. I'm guessing this was all Paul's doing. He must have come up with it

One of my favorite scenes of the show for me is still the one in 1x19 in which Elena stabs Stefan with vervain. Paul's performance there is just wow.

And yes, the "turn it off" scene. Brilliant.

Thanks for the contribution.

I agree with all the scenes you pointed out. No matter how many times I watch, the break up scene at the end of 'Plan B' always amazes me - he is just brilliant.

I'm glad others are appreciating Paul's acting :)

From recent Julie Plec interview:

"For me, the biggest pleasure of the season -- which I won't say is totally a surprise because theoretically we knew that he had this in him -- is watching Paul Wesley do what he's done. It's been kind of thrilling," she says. "I love me some Paul! I think he's a wonderful actor, and to really see him get to explode on screen has been so exciting and so intense and emotional. I'm really proud of him. I'm proud of the show, in a way, because that storyline really worked the way that we wanted it work."

This part of her interview, at least, made me happy.

I completely agree. Paul is very underrated. It is amazing a talent like his has only be limited to TV. When TVD began I did not think much of him, he appeared to just be another CW star (you know very good looking but not exceptionally talented). However, Paul quickly proved me wrong. He continues to amaze me each week.
