Same character all the time

The fact he has won two oscars for playing pretty much the same character is crazy. You could say they're not the same, but he plays them the exact same way.

But what really gets me is how he still hasn't really done anything different. Does he ever take away his accent or do another one? Does he ever play characters that aren't super animated like the ones he always plays?

I wish Philip K. Dick had written Lord of Light

He has such a distinctive accent that it's hard for him to have a lot of range in English language roles. He's good, but I find him overrated.

reply

He might not be entirely to blame, it's obvious that his role in IB left a strong impression on producers (not to mention, the sucess and acclaim he got for it), and they're prone to typecast him.

Javier Bardem always talks with the same accent, yet he is one of the greatest actors around. Jack Nicholson always played a certain character but it was good, so he was considered a great actor. Yes, he has done other roles, like in Carnage. Those two Oscars were won for very different characters. One was a psychopath who really had an twisted sense of humor, while the other was completely the opposite with almost a childlike quirkiness and a humanity that exceeded all the others around him despite his profession.

this are really 2 roles
but he played the first one for decades
and the second one just 2 or three times(?!)
still everyone sayd he is one of the greatest actors...
and he... is
somehow!

reply

though its not correct that waltz is always playing the same role,
it is just that you remember just these

he was undoubtly great in inglor.bastards.
a performance nearly noone will forget,

but he played different roles for example in carnage or in zero theorem.
though the second film wasnt good,
his performance was at least interesting.

sure, he is not a chameleon,
but which hollywood-actor is one?!
not SO many!
(i just think about sean penn whom i ve underestimated for years.
but bruce willis, johnny depp, and so on and so on)

and if they played different roles... they had a lot of movies
and just some of them gave those actors the chance.

waltz just started his hollywood career

reply

oh! i thought you were still talking bout jack nicholson,
with 2 roles
cause it fits quite well...
he always played the dark, demonic psycho
and just sometimes the neurotic

reply

and he (nicholson) played the psycho for decades

reply

and was said to be one of the greatest actors

so! now ot should be understandable what i ve meant ^_^
