Underrated /Should had been nominated for 'Misty'
She equaled Glen Close in 'Fatal Attraction' with her portrayel in Misty, and certainly deserved a best supporting actress nom.

shareshe was on Joy Behr and discussed/ answered this very same question! lol. She said when youre nominated against Jane Fonda in Klute and Venessa Redgrave...well, she was like I had no shot lol! But didnt sound bitter - just that she accepted it like a good sport and was aware of the reality lol.
shareBut she wasn't nominated, or do you mean to be in the running for a nom?
I think it would be different today; the Academy is more open to films like Misty and relatively unknown actors being nominated.
Ironically, she's every bit of good as Fonda.
I totally agree; she should've won an oscar for her outstanding and terrifying performance. She was nominated for a golden globe, and she should have won. In my opinion, Play Misty for me is a classic. It's too bad it didn't get recognized as much as Fatal Attraction, especially since it came out first. I think you're right...It was probably because Jessica Walter wasn't a relatively known actress like Jane Fonda or Glenn Close.
sharePlay Misty for Me seems to have gained acclaim belatedly.
Another reason for her not being nominated is that is probably was not widely seen; the Oscars,in a sense, are awarded to the best performances which are seen, rather than only exist, and to higher budget films.
That's why the actor who gives a riveting performance in,say,"Meatcleaver Massacre" will never be considered.
