I've been told he was a director photo prior to be director, and that's why the uses of color was so proeminent.

Anyone know in which movies?

Only one short movie, "Etude empirique sur l'influence du son sur la persistance rétinienne" - so I think you are mistaken. The use of colors in his movie can be attributed to his pick of cinematographers - especially prominent in his two latest movies is Roger Deakins.
