Is there a riff b/t her + Rai?
imdb has some interesting comments in the trivia section--are her and aishwara rai having some kind of rivalry?

shareIn an interview it was clear she did not get on Rai but put it down to a clash of cultures. Bollywood vs English actors. Rai has lots of gofers and has her own make up woman who does her look for every movie, Indira felt Rai is more a model than an actress.
shareShe's prolly a bit jealous too, I mean Rai has millions of adoring Asian fans and likely has a higher standard of living. If you ask me her comments are a bit unjustified considering the 2 actresses cater to different audiences with different tastes. Besides Varma seems to be a bit of a Shannon tweed wannabe, seeming to be more dependent on sex appeal than acting ability judging by the roles she seems to pick/get, she can act no doubt but it just seems by her roles that the sex overshadows the acting.
The clash of cultures remark is interesting, she was quite effusive with praise for a couple of Indian actors IIRC. She called Om Puri(The guy from "east is east") "a god".
I don't think she's jealous...why should she be...Rai is admired for mainly superficial reasons and is not a very good actress, to say the least.
shareI doubt it is jealously, more likely a clash of cultures and a way of life. Varma is English, she does a lot of theatre work, and lives, what we would know, as a normal life. Rai is something differently entirely. It's like comparing Varma's lifestlye to that of a Princess. Plus she has been drama school educated, and the theatre is 'real acting'. Just a culture clash me thinks.
shareAish has millions of adoring fans for her looks not her talent..Shes got as much talent as Paris Hilton has..Okay i wouldnt go that far but shes like standard in terms of acting..shes no Jodie Foster or Charleze Theron. Im Indian and theres only some performances which are great like Devdas but i have to say Indira is 10 times a better actor.
I think Varma was trying to say that Aish is more about looking beautiful in everything she does instead of her actually becoming a versatile actress. I mean the roles shes picking for Hollywood films arnt very challanging..Pink Panther??..as long as her role is to do with beauty she will get the role right?
It is a East West thing but these Bollywood actors do think there 'it' when 70% are just phoneys. The serious actors are the legendary bollywood men..Shahrukh and Amitab etc.. who could actually cut it in the East and West.
I kind of agree with Varmas quote..
"See ya in anotha' life, brotha'!"
I would agree with your comments about Rai for the early part of her career; she was a model turned actress. But Hum dil de chuke sanam (one of her best performance, IMO) onwards she has turned into a real actress. You can't compare apples and oranges. She is asked to act certain way in Bollywood and she does most of her roles pretty well. I did not think Indira was exceptional actress either, but B&P is only movie of her I have seen. And please, don't put SRK in the "serious actors" category, unless you were intentionally trying to be funny.
Jodie Foster or Charlize are not that great. Jodie only does one type of role -- the serious, self-determined type movie after movie. Charlize is better in terms of different type of characters but she is not that great at playing them, at least non on a consistent basis.
Aish Rai is just a overrated cause of her model looks that's all. She is not an good actress and i always wish i won't watch any of her movie, since i saw her movie called HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM i backed out. She sucked in it and did overacting. Indira can act actually and she knows Acting is not profession for Aish. She is certainly right whatever she said in her comments to Aish.
