'Traditional masculinity' officially labeled 'harmful' by the American Psych. Association

This guy's last name says it all:

“Though men benefit from patriarchy, they are also impinged upon by patriarchy,” says Ronald F. Levant, EdD, a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Akron and co-editor of the APA volume “The Psychology of Men and Masculinities.”

That's a funny article. The narrative of promoting weakness and condemning the strong always boggled my mind. If you want to see what a society looks like without strong, male, fatherly figures, just look at the black community :(

It's important to have balance in everything, but this demand for men to apologize for being strong and masculine is ridiculous.

reply

Oof, cheap shot on the race angle there. Can't say it surprises me to see you post it though. Typical.

reply

Please tell me how you think I was taking a cheap shot at the black community. In 2015, it was reported that over 75% of black households were fatherless. Would you say that the black community is in the greatest shape today? What other example should I have used instead where there arent as many fatherly figures present? I would really like to know and I am open to being corrected with facts and data.

Thanks, Frogarama.

reply

Its a cheap shot USING the "black community" for your politically and culturally biased diatribe against anything that dares to question the value of traditional patriarchy.

The connection you made is tenuous at best, which makes it even more exploitative. As far as I'm concerned, you just wanted a justifiable excuse to toss in something negative about black people, when it wasn't relevant.

You're welcome, always happy to explain in detail. Always!

reply

Why would I want to say something bad about blacks when I myself am black? Doesn't make sense, Frogarama. Again, if you have a better example Id be happy to use it instead.

EDIT: You know, come to think if it, my first complaint that I posted on these forums was that the left injected race into mostly everything. Now, I realize i may be stepping into said territory and inching towards being hypocritical. I understand the call out and sincerely appreciate it.

Oh and this quote tells me you didn't read anything in the link:
the APA also encouraged men to embrace the positive aspects of traditional masculinity, like leadership and courage.

That line defies the cheap shot you leveled against your darker skinned brethren. That line says you responded from ignorance.

reply

No, I read it. But I still stand by what I wrote. Maybe I should have clarified me bringing in the main media's narrative along with the OP. That's my mistake.

Before he laughably became the hero to all White Nationalist wannabe-alphas, Trump was a joke of a businessman who relied on family money, nepotism and bankruptcies; he was a "Hollywood type" with a silly TV show; and he paraded around a trophy wife he could only get because of his money.

Now suddenly he's your Chosen One and somehow a way to vicariously experience lost masculinity.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL and he eats McDonald's all the time, so manly!

reply

How dare you, Frog! What in THE WORLD is wrong with eating at McDonalds!?

reply

Nothing, I love it. I have several McRibs every time it comes back! Just a few weeks ago I did the combo that came with two McRibs.

I usually get the Big Mac combo... and I miss the double Big Mac. It actually tasted even better, imo.

But none of that is manly. It's more childlike, and I'm proud to admit to still being young at heart.

reply

Most macho types are childish.

I'm proud to be in touch with my feminine side, even though most women would look at me and assume I was the strong silent 'manly' type.

And I certainly don't eat McDonalds.

What happened to THIS sock?

So many socks utilized by the trolls.... SO MANY.

So, the short version is: we need a drug that neutralizes testosterone. I’m sure that will thrill the ladies.

I speak for ALL my female friends when I state that his take on masculinity is NOT the path to pleasure night.
If you don't mind me asking, what in your opinion is?

reply

All those attributes are great, and ones I hope I share, or at least aspire to. Still, I'm not sure that any of them represent 'traditional masculinity'.

How does the guy's last name say it all? What does 'Levant' mean?

Or am I being naïve here and overlooking your anti-Semitic insinuations?
