Several points:
About a year ago, there was a wall and DACA compromise which Trump reneged on after saying he would sign it. One of his advisors talked him out of it.
Last year, over $1 billion dollars was given for border security, but Trump has only spent 6%. Nobody is taking him serious since he is asking for more money, but hasn't spent last year's allotment.
Don't forget that Congress has only recently become majority Democrat. For two years, the Republicans controlled both the House and Senate without allocating money for a wall. The reason is because most people don't want it. It's wasteful and doesn't solve any problem. Border crossings have been coming down in recent years and most illegals actually overstay their visas - not cross the border. Drugs are smuggled inside shipping containers. The wall will actually cost 28 billion dollars - not $5 billion - which is too much to spend on something that doesn't solve any problem.
The compromise is that Schumer already said they would allocate the same amount as last year, over $1 billion for border security - even though Trump hasn't spent last years allocation. None of the money is too be used on an ineffective wall.
It's obvious that Trump has no problem with illegal aliens because he has hired them to work in his business. Two of them are being quesitoned by the FBI in an ongoing investigation.
And finally, he said Mexico would pay for the wall. Let them!
