Thoroughly enjoyed this film.

A great throwback to the good ol' Hammer days, with some of that merciless brutality we got in Pan's Labyrinth. Beautiful on almost every technical level. Killer performances from practically the whole cast, and some near-shakespearean dialogue as the cherry on top. Sure the story sags a bit in the middle, but in now way was that a deal breaker for me. Guillermo continues to show us just how talented of a filmmaker he is.

The opening section in Buffalo was really evocative; it captured the time and place and introduced the characters very skillfully. I also found the middle section, where the new world (Edith) is brought into the old decaying world of the Sharpes to be fascinating - you get to explore Allerdale Hall, its various levels (a character in itself). The third section, where the s#%t hits the fan, was suspenseful and violent, but also ultimately tragic and moving. This movie has really stuck with me. This is classic gothic romance, but filtered through the mind of del Toro, who gives it a unique spin.
