He chose not to go to America, partly because he wanted to focus on his theatre career, and partly because he's become a father to four kids since leaving DW and has to juggle demands of career and family.

America's not the be all and end all. American blockbuster movies are mostly pretty crap. Some British actors openly admit they only do American movies for the money.

You clearly won't believe it but the American market is not the only market in the world. Moreover, the ruthless "Profit at Any Cost" ethic of the American market is absolutely repellent to many non Americans. Even if Tennant never worked in the US again, he would have had a fantastically successful career, with more to come.
