In my opinion, you can't go wrong with the Blu-ray transfers for Criterion releases, for I have yet to watch one of their releases which I wouldn't rate as excellent. Case in point: I recently watched Criterion's Blu-ray version of one of my all-time fave films, Seven Samurai on my UHD TV and could not believe my eyes as to how great this film looked and sounded. Sure, some scenes appeared grainy, yet overall the clarity and contrast levels of the daylight scenes as well as many of the close-up shots were phenomenal for a film that was originally released back in 1954, so understandably the transfer had to go through extensive restoration since the original negative for this film was ruined so a negative had to be created from the original fine-grain master positive using very tedious wetgate processing.
Other noteworthy Criterion Blu-ray releases that I watched over the past year and was very impressed by include The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Brazil, City Lights, Pans Labyrinth, The Big Chill, Badlands, 12 Angry Men, The Thin Red Line, Following, The Fisher King, On the Waterfront, The Manchurian Candidate (1962), A Room with a View, Easy Rider, Nashville, Mulholland Drive, Watership Down, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Dressed to Kill, The Last Emperor, Thief, Anatomy of a Murder, The Game, Rosemary's Baby, Stagecoach, Being John Malkovich, Shallow Grave, Yojimbo, Two Days, One Night and The Vanishing.
